Common questions

My TV app shows a code. What do I do?

Many TV apps sign you in with a short code instead of making you type a password with the remote. Keep the code on screen, open the web address the app shows on your phone or computer, enter the code, and sign in there. The TV finishes signing in by itself.

I can't find the app in my TV's store.

Try searching for the station's name and its call letters (like the four letters starting with K or W). Some stations name their app differently from what people call the station; the button on the station's page here always opens the right one. If the station has no app for your TV, its page links to the PBS or NPR app instead.

My TV is older and doesn't have the app.

Older smart TVs often can't install new apps. A small streaming device plugged into the TV's HDMI port (Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, or a Google TV device) adds them, and these devices get updates for years.

Do the apps cost anything?

Public media apps are free to download, and most shows and livestreams are free to watch and listen to. Some extras come with a donation to your station: seePBS Passport and NPR+ below.

What is PBS Passport?

Passport is a benefit many PBS stations give their donors: extended access to a large on-demand library of PBS shows, in the PBS app and some station apps. Each station sets its own donation level, so check with yours. After you donate, your station sends you a code to activate it.

Already a member but can't see Passport shows? Sign in to the app with the same email address you gave your station; a different email is the most common reason it doesn't show up. You can look up your membership with that email on PBS's site.

What is NPR+?

NPR+ is a set of podcast perks for supporters: sponsor-free listening, bonus episodes, and early access to some shows. You get it by donating to NPR or to a participating local station (NPR lists a minimum of $8 a month or $96 a year). Regular listening stays free for everyone. Some stations include it for existing donors; sign in on NPR's site with the email your station has on file.
