About

Station App Finder helps anyone find their local public media station and every way to watch and listen: the station's own apps for phone, tablet, and TV, and its website. It's an independent prototype.

Why this exists

Local public media stations make and share programs for their own communities: local news and public affairs, arts and culture, history, and learning for every age. They're free to watch over the air, and they're run by local nonprofits, universities, and public agencies that answer to the people they serve.

Most stations now have their own apps, but they're hard to find. They're spread across many app stores and devices, often under names that don't match what people call their station, and many people don't know which station is theirs. This site puts every station's apps in one place, for every device, so it takes seconds to find your own.

Why the station's own app

  • The best experience. A station's app brings together its livestream, its local shows, and its schedule, built for your phone, tablet, or TV.
  • Everything your station makes. National apps are great for national programs, but your station's app is where its local work lives.
  • A stronger local station. Watching in the station's own app keeps a direct connection between the station and its audience, and gives it a clearer picture of what its community values.

For any device a station's own app isn't on, we point you to the PBS app, so you can always watch.

How we list stations

  • Neutral. Every station is listed and shown the same way. Results are ordered by distance or how well they match your search, nothing else.
  • Station first. We link a station's own apps. The PBS app appears only for devices the station's own app isn't on.
  • No endorsement. We aren't affiliated with or endorsed by PBS or NPR, and we use their names as text only.

Where the information comes from

  • Stations, owners, websites, and transmitter locations: Wikipedia's List of PBS member stations, List of NPR stations, and each station's article, by Wikipedia contributors, used under CC BY-SA 4.0. We extract and combine fields from those articles; the station data we publish is shared under the same license.
  • App links: each station's own website. We don't scrape app stores.
  • ZIP code locations: U.S. Census Bureau ZCTA Gazetteer (public domain).
  • Every field records where it came from and when. The data and code are public at GitHub.
